What it is: an AI-powered mobile photo editor specialized for e-commerce sellers and marketplaces. Core function — background removal + product photo enhancement, with AI-generated backgrounds, shadows, and templates. Available on iOS, Android, web, and via a B2B API.
Founded: February 2020 in Paris by Matthieu Rouif (CEO, ex-GoPro) and Eliot Andres.
Reach: 200M+ downloads, processing 5B+ images per year, available in 180+ countries.
Pricing: freemium app with Pro and Max subscription tiers for individuals and small businesses. Separate B2B API priced per image ($0.01–$0.10/image), with Enterprise pricing for high-volume customers (200K+ images/year).
Funding: $64M total raised — Seed (2020), Series A ($19M, 2022), Series B ($43M at $500M valuation, 2024). Profitable since year two.
Position: not a generic AI photo editor. Explicitly built for resellers and small e-commerce businesses on eBay, Poshmark, Depop, Vinted, Etsy, Amazon, and Shopify.
Photoroom is reported as an "AI photo editor success." That framing is useful for the fundraising narrative. It's misleading as a marketing case study.
The category of "AI photo editing" added near-zero unique acquisition leverage for Photoroom. Every other AI photo app in 2024-2025 had access to similar models, similar capabilities, similar funding pools. Most are sub-$10M ARR. The model was never the moat.
What Photoroom did differently: they built a distribution engine that didn't need the AI hype to work. The mechanisms below are mostly older than ChatGPT. They compound. They're largely free.
Result: 200M+ downloads, $100M ARR by 2025, profitable since year two (Sacra). Today, Photoroom sits in 7.6% of US Shopify sellers' phones, 6.9% of Amazon Sellers, and 5.6% of Etsy Sellers (Sensor Tower). Penetration like that doesn't come from category tailwinds.
In February 2020, when Photoroom launched, the obvious target was "people who want to edit photos with AI." That target had a fatal property — it was huge, generic, and had no commercial pressure to convert.
