How CeraVe turned one ridiculous coincidence into a story that creators and audiences wanted to investigate.

Thesis

CeraVe did not ask creators to repeat a campaign message. It gave them an unresolved story: did actor Michael Cera secretly create CeraVe?

The connection was absurd but instantly understandable. That made it easy to question, remix and escalate. The final Super Bowl ad did not start the campaignโ€”it resolved a story the internet had already spent weeks spreading.

The reported result

The case study published by the campaign team describes a three-week, earned-first rollout involving 450 influencers. It reports 15.4 billion earned impressions before the Super Bowl reveal and a 25% sales increase. Later award material reports a larger total of roughly 32 billion earned impressions across the full campaign.

These are campaign-reported figures. The reusable lesson is the system that produced participation, not the assumption that every brand can reproduce the same scale.

Mechanism 1: Find a coincidence people can explain in one sentence

Michael Cera and CeraVe created a connection that required no setup. It was weak enough to be funny and plausible enough to investigate for a moment.

Apply it

Look for a cultural connection already present in your product:

The premise should survive a one-sentence retelling. If it needs a deck to understand, it will not travel.
