WHY THIS EXISTS: In the first half of 2026, new apps on the App Store doubled to about 560,000, while downloads grew 2%. That is Sensor Tower data reported by The New York Times (via 9to5Mac, July 20, 2026), and the growth in new apps is attributed to AI-assisted "vibe coding" making apps faster to build. Building got cheap. Getting an app noticed did not. When twice as many new apps compete for downloads that barely moved, spending on a launch without checking how the app will travel is a gamble.

WHAT THIS IS: A diagnostic, not a prediction. It scores five things a new app needs before paid or creator spend starts. It will not tell you how many downloads you will get. It will tell you where the launch is most likely to leak, so you fix the cheap problems before paying for traffic.

HOW LONG IT TAKES: About two hours for one person, with a phone, a screen recorder and your analytics open. Better: two people score separately, then compare.

PART 1 - How the scoring works

Five checks. Each one gets 0, 1 or 2, and each score needs evidence you can show: a recording, a screenshot, a link, a message from a real person. No evidence, no points.

Score Meaning
0 Missing, or fails the test
1 Partly there, or passes only with explanation
2 Passes the test, and you can show the evidence

Total: 0 to 10. Use it as a gate, not a grade.

Total Reading What to do
0-4 Not ready for spend Fix the lowest checks first. Don't buy traffic yet.
5-7 Fixable Fix every check scored 0 or 1, starting with checks 1 and 4. Run small tests.
8-10 Ready to test with spend Start with a small, tracked test and read the results by creator and by page.

These bands are our working rule, not an industry benchmark. Set your own gate before you score, and write it down.

Two hard stops, whatever the total: a score of 0 on Check 1 (demo) means creators have nothing to show; a score of 0 on Check 4 (tracking) means you won't know what worked. Fix those first.

CHECK 1 - Can a creator demonstrate it in ten seconds?

Why it matters: Creator content lives on one thing: a short demonstration of what the app does. If it takes a minute of setup to understand, creators can't show it and viewers won't stay.

The test

  1. Pick the one task your app does best.
  2. Screen-record yourself doing it from a fresh install, at normal speed.
